Day 1 in Getting to know Beijing

As the capital City of the People'e Republic of China, Beijing, or "Jing" for short, is the center of the nation's politics, culture, transportation, and travel, and also a center for international commerce. The recorded history of Beijing can date back more than 3,000 years and as a capital more than 800 years. Divided into 16 districts and 2 counties, it covers an area of 6, 486.5 square miles, stretching 99 miles from east to west and about 112 miles from north to south. It has a population of 13, 819 million (census 2000).
Beijing lies in the northwest of the North China Plain with the Bodhai Sea located 93 miles to the southeast. The southeastern part of the city is a plain, while the city's west, north, and northeast are bordered by the mountains of Taihangshan, Junddushan, and Yanshan. This section of the city is called Beijing Bay because it looks like a bay bordered by land on three sides.
